At Surf Lifesaving NSW our mission is simple; save lives, create great Australians and build better communities. In order to do this, we want to provide home schooling parents and carers with the best possible programs, resources and opportunities to engage with us and learn about water safety, the beach and coastal environments.

LEARNING RESOURCES

Our team of educators and teachers have created curriculum aligned unit resources for Early Stage 1 to Stage 6 to assist you to integrate beach and coastal safety activities into your children's lesson plans in an easy and simple way. These units are complemented by subject specific resources, worksheets and activities.

PRIMARY

The Primary Teaching Resources delve into the amazing world of the beach, ocean and inland waterways and lays a foundational knowledge of coastal and inland water environment safety. Explore the features of our waterways and coastlines, uncover hazards and learn how to keep safe and mitigate risks all while having fun and enjoying all that our amazing natural environments have to offer.

Students will learn about coral bleaching and use an on-line simulation to investigate the effects of different temperatures on coral.

Prepare your students to stay safe on the beaches and in our waterways by embedding some of these BTN episodes in your classroom.

SECONDARY

These resources focus on delivering the key water safety message that the beach is a place for everyone to safely experience the beach, coastline and inland waterways. They also give your children the opportunity to further develop their literacy skills, address the Cross-Curriculum Priorities of the NSW Curriculum and give them authentic learning by creating meaningful projects through inquiry-based tasks.

Take a survey of microplastics at Narabeen Lagoon and learn about the role stormwater plays in transporting plastics to the oceans.

What else would you like to teach your children?

Learn interesting facts about sharks, what to do if caught in rip current and watch how a blue ringed octopus changes colour. Your children can take a tour of the beach with our drone flight simulation and learn how we created this experience. They can join us for our annual Big Beach Week and even ask a surf lifesaver a question.

How to stay safe at the beach

The beach is for everyone to enjoy. Knowing how to stay safe while at the beach will make sure that you and your family have the best day possible.

Understanding Sharks & Avoiding Encounters

Although we fear sharks, they are an important part of the ecosystem and a reality of the ocean.

Can you spot a rip?

A rip is a very strong and narrow current that pulls out to the sea. It’s nearly impossible to fight against a strong rip as it pulls you away from the beach at the speed of one to two metres per second!

Why do blue-ringed octopus change colour?

The blue ringed octopus is a beautiful, timid, but deadly creature which can be found in rock pools.
