The ocean is unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be.

Launching in Term 1, 2027, Know Your Limits is a brand new secondary education program developed by Surf Life Saving New South Wales. It aims to build the knowledge, confidence and decision-making skills required to stay safer at Australia’s beaches and coastal environments.
Students learn to recognise hazards, understand their personal limits and make safer choices with their friends.

Why Know Your Limits?

Young men aged 15–29 have long been overrepresented in Australia’s drowning statistics. The Australian Water Safety Strategy identifies this group as a priority and highlights high-school education as a key prevention action. Early intervention is central to Know Your Limits: reaching students before and during these higher-risk years, rather than waiting for a close call. Designed for all secondary students, the program aims to help change this long-standing pattern of preventable loss through beach safety education that encourages safer habits into adulthood.
