Popular Beach Safety Program for Schools in NSW
Program Overview
Big Beach Week is a free beach safety education program for all NSW students, including preschool, primary, secondary, daycare, and homeschool students.
The program provides teachers with flexible, ready-to-use resources and a detailed teaching guide to help students learn how to stay safe at the beach.
Teachers can run the program in their own classrooms on their own schedule, before the summer holidays.
All teaching resources will be available on the website.
Key Learning Objectives
- Beach & Coastal Safety: Discover beach hazards, do a school treasure hunt, and learn how to stay safe.
- Lifesavers & Lifeguards: Learn about their roles, watch a beach video and write a story.
- Marine Creatures: Watch a rock pool exploration video, research marine life, and compare creatures.

Collaboration with Taronga Zoo!
Big Beach Week 2026 will include special content in collaboration with Taronga Zoo, helping students learn about beach safety, marine creatures and caring for the NSW coastal environment. Students will explore animals such as seals, turtles, seabirds, sharks and rockpool creatures while learning how to stay safe at the beach.
Students will have the opportunity to
- Learn about marine creatures found along the NSW coastline
- Explore rockpools, sea life and coastal habitats
- Connect beach safety messages with care for animals and the ocean
- Meet special animal themed content, including Bondi the seal
