Getting ready for a day at the beach.
Going to the beach is lots of fun but it is important to prepare before you leave home. Explore our top tips to learn more about how you can make sure you are ready for a safe and fun day at the beach.
What do we need to know to have a safe and fun day?
Prepare and do your research before you leave home
To make sure that you can stay safe while at the beach, you must prepare and do your research before you leave home.
Is this beach patrolled by lifesavers today?
If a beach is unpatrolled, there is no one there to help you if you get into trouble. Do not swim at unpatrolled beaches.
Is the beach open or closed?
If the beach is closed, it is extremely dangerous to enter the water. Avoid all closed beaches.
What are the hazards at the beach?
Hazards include rip currents, marine creatures like bluebottles, and large waves/swell.
How strong is the sun?
The Australian sun is intense. Check your sunscreen's rating, use sun protection liberally throughout the day, and make sure to stay hydrated.
What should I pack for a safe and enjoyable day at the beach?
Sunscreen, a hat, and a long-sleeved top
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside. If you are entering the water, sunscreen must be reapplied regularly throughout the day.
Swimwear
Do not swim while wearing normal clothing. Clothing becomes extremely heavy when wet (waterlogged), making it very difficult to float, swim, or stand. There are many safe types of swimwear available.
Rock Fishing Safety Gear
If you are rock fishing, always follow the law and wear the correct clothing and safety gear. Wearing a lifejacket while rock fishing is mandatory by law, and you will be fined if you are not wearing one. Many people have drowned because they did not know how to use their lifejacket.
Do not bring alcohol
Ensure you bring plenty of water for hydration. Do not consume alcohol while you are at the beach. It can impair your ability to think clearly and make good decisions. Alcohol slows down reaction times and increases the chance of getting into trouble in the water.
