Dress ups
Role-playing resources that encourage children to correctly identify and wear essential sun and beach safety gear.
1. Be a life saver!
This helps children associate the iconic colours of Surf Life Saving with safety and assistance.

Materials needed
- Any red and yellow clothing (T-shirts, shorts, or even socks).
- The patrol cap created in the art and craft section.
- A toy whistle or a rescue tube such as a pool noodle.
- Cushions
Instructions
- Have your child layer their red and yellow gear. Explain that these colours are bright so people can see them from far away in the water.
- Have them walk along the beach (a rug or hallway) with their pool noodle (rescue tube).
- Act as a swimmer who is unsure where to go. The child can point to the flags (two cushions) and say, ‘Always swim between the red and yellow flags!’
2. Our community heroes
A game to help kids recognise the different uniforms of people who keep us safe.

Materials needed
- Police: A blue shirt and a badge (made of foil or cardboard).
- Fire/Ambulance: A high-vis vest or a plain jacket.
- Life saver: The red/yellow outfit from the previous activity.
Instructions
- A parent/carer calls out a scenario: ‘There is a fire in the bush near the beach!’
- The child must quickly put on the correct accessory to respond to the scene.
- Briefly explain that while they look different, all these people are safe people who are there to help if your child is lost or scared.
