Jenni's Beach Adventure Journal

Tuesday the 1st of February, 2022 . . . Iluka Bluff, Northern NSW
Is there anything cuter than a lamb yawning?.. nope I didn’t think so either until I met this baby Joey and its mum in the Bundjalung National Park, Northern NSW.
These are eastern grey kangaroos...they look like a cross between a big bunny rabbit and a furry deer!
Early in the morning they will head down to the beach for their breakfast of seaweed and mangrove seed pods which have washed up from overnight tides. They will then spend the day resting in shade and sheltered areas.

Here is my photo of baby Joey in its mum's pouch. At around 9 months, the joey will emerge from the pouch for the first time, usually by toppling out just for a minute or two. It then quickly scrambles back into the safety of the pouch by kicking with its hind legs and doing a complete somersault, ending up with its head facing the opening!!

Check out this adult male with his family. He stands taller than a grown man at over 2m and can weigh up to 66kg! The females are smaller and generally weigh about 32kg. Did you know that a group of kangaroos is called a mob and is usually made up of one dominant male, several adult females, and both male and female juveniles.

They are definitely keeping an eye on me!

I went to the beach every morning as I was super keen to see the kangaroos on the beach. But alas! I was never there at the right time. However I did come across these cool kangaroo tracks in the sand.
