Jenni's Beach Adventure Journal

Tuesday the 1st of February, 2022 . . . Woody Head, Northern NSW
When you stroll along the beach you may come across a few of these blue aqua sea creatures like I did when I was on my daily walk.
The Blue Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus) and his "dinner" the Man of War Blue Bottle, the Blue Buttons (Porpita) and the By-the-wind-sailor.
These creatures are open ocean dwellers but with consistent onshore swells and wind they wash up on to the beach.
Nature sure is amazing as the Blue Dragons feed on the Blue Bottles, the Blue Buttons & the By-the-wind-sailor. The Dragons then ingest their stinging cells and become toxic themselves. What!?!
So what happens then? Let's learn more about these interesting creatures.

Portuguese man o' war - or better known as Bluebottles are often found on our beaches. These beautiful creatures drift on the ocean surface with its inflated blue bladder acting as a sail in the wind. But they can sure pack a punch if you get stung from their tentacles.

Bluebottle-2

This the Blue Dragon that I found on the beach. It's a little bit squished so jump on this link and you can learn more about it. But do remember that you CANNOT touch them as it will feel like you have been stung by a Bluebottle. Eek!

Blue dragon sea slug

These little cuties are only around the size of a coin but can really pack a punch as they have tentacles that contain millions (yes millions!) of stinging cells that act like a harpoon. They are called Blue Button...if you see any on the beach DON'T TOUCH THEM!

Blue Button Jellyfish

By-the-wind-sailer...in the scientific world they are known as a Velella velella. This little fella has a flat transparent float and erect sail so that it can take advantage of the wind to skim across the ocean and onto the beach. Interestingly they are made up of a colony of tiny individual polyps. It does have stinging tentacles so DON'T PICK THEM UP!

Let's learn some more about these animals that float on the ocean and are usually blue on one side and pale underneath.
